Senator David Norris, Champion Of Gay Rights In Ireland Retires

Senator David Norris, a prominent advocate for homosexual law reform and the first openly gay person elected to public office in Ireland, officially retired today. Delivering his final speech at the Seanad on Monday, January 22, 2024, he participated in the Order of Business for the last time, concluding a distinguished career that spanned nearly 37 years.

Senator Norris, who announced his retirement earlier in 2023, was initially elected to the Dublin University Constituency in 1987. Renowned for overturning Ireland's anti-homosexuality law through a 14-year campaign, he founded the Campaign for Homosexual Law Reform.

Upon his retirement, Senator Norris was welcomed at Leinster House by Head usher Alan Ruane and Senators Boyhan and McDowell. During his final speech, he expressed gratitude to his Trinity constituency voters and called for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Colleagues from the Seanad Independent Group paid tribute to Senator Norris's legacy. Senator Victor Boyhan praised him as a man of true grit, energy, charm, and compassion, highlighting his courageous advocacy as an enduring legacy. Group whip Senator Michael McDowell acknowledged Norris's contributions to various causes, including gay rights, Palestine, and anti-apartheid in South Africa, emphasizing his courage and irreverence. Senator Tom Clonan extended wishes for a long and happy retirement, while Senator Sharon Keogan admired Norris's warmth, kindness, and advocacy for equality and diversity.

Senator Norris plans to split his time between Cyprus and Dublin in his post-retirement years.
